We operate on children, from infants to teenagers, for hernia and hydrocele, undescended testis, appendicitis, bowel obstruction, conditions of the abdomen and urinary tract present from birth, and injuries that need surgery.
One consultant paediatric surgeon sees patients here. We have consultant anaesthetists, an intensive care unit, a 24-hour laboratory, and X-ray, ultrasound and CT. Our paediatrics department looks after the child’s medical care before and after the operation. Bring any earlier scans, discharge summaries and the vaccination card to the OPD.
Conditions we treat
- Hernia and hydrocele, a swelling in the groin or scrotum
- Undescended testis, a testis that has not come down into the scrotum
- Appendicitis
- Conditions present from birth affecting the abdomen and urinary tract
- Obstruction of the bowel in infants and children
- Injuries needing an operation
When to seek emergency care
A lump in the groin or scrotum that comes and goes, or a testis that has never been felt in the scrotum, needs an OPD visit.
Abdominal pain that is getting worse rather than better, particularly with vomiting or fever, needs to be seen the same day. Do not wait for an OPD appointment: come to our emergency department.
Severe abdominal pain, a child who seems very unwell, a groin lump that has become hard and tender and will not go back in, or repeated green vomiting in a baby is an emergency. Come to our emergency department at once or call 1800 345 7777.
